Sports Premium
How to use the PE and sport premium
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity and sport you offer.
This means that you should use the premium to:
- develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities that your school already offers
- build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
Schools can use the premium to secure improvements in the following indicators:
- the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
- the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
- increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- increased participation in competitive sport
For example, you can use your funding to:
- provide staff with professional development, mentoring, training and resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively and embed physical activity across your school
- hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers to enhance or extend current opportunities
- introduce new sports, dance or other activities to encourage more pupils to take up sport and physical activities
- support and involve the least active children by providing targeted activities, and running or extending school sports and holiday clubs
- enter or run more sport competitions
- partner with other schools to run sports activities and clubs
- increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
- encourage pupils to take on leadership or volunteer roles that support sport and physical activity within the school
- Raise attainment in primary school swimming to meet requirements of the national curriculum before the end of key stage 2
- embed physical activity into the school day through active travel to and from school, active playgrounds and active
Sports Premium Grant
PE and Sport play a very important part in the life of St Winefride’s Catholic Primary School, a Voluntary Academy where there are at least two sessions per week dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum, along with further opportunities to ensure all our pupils are achieving at least 30 minutes of daily activity within school. We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the development of children and through participation in sport and physical education, young people learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others.
There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth and development. PE improves motor skills and increases muscle strength and bone density, which in turn makes students more likely to engage in healthy activity outside of school. Furthermore it educates children on the positive benefits of exercise and allows them to understand how good it can make them feel. Sport also provides a healthy environment for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing.
Last years focus (2023/24) was using the PE and School Sport Premium (£19,150) to improve the quality of PE and Sport provision in the following ways:
- To organise 4 after school sports clubs (multisports and dance) for all year groups.
- Provide adult led dinner time activities using a variety of sport equipment, leading to a higher level of pupil engagement across the school.
- Providing a scheme of work for PE that offers a broad and balanced sports curriculum to support staff.
- Enabling children to attend more competitions, and to increase pupils’ participation in school games competitions.
- To organise a whole school Active week in summer 2 to expose children to a range of activities as well as information regarding how to live a healthier lifestyle.
- Ensuring all children have access to and subsidising extra-curricular activities throughout the year allowing them to lead even more active lives, including:
- Year 4 swimming
- Participation in the Daily Mile at least 3 times a week
- Replenishing consumable resources to support our engaging curriculum and ensure all children can participate in PE lessons.
- Purchase new resources to enable delivery of a broad PE curriculum.
- Support and involve the least active children by providing targeted activities, and running or extending school sports.
- Introduce new sports, dance or other activities to encourage more pupils to take up sport and physical activities.
- CPD for staff to ensure progression of skills and high quality learning
Our outdoor equipment/MUGA pitch/equipment provided continues to motivate children to be more active at playtimes.
