Mental Health and Wellbeing/ Pastoral support

At St. Winefride’s, we are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We also take pride in supporting staff parents and children pastorally.

We are aware that anyone may need additional emotional support at points in their life.

At St.Winefride's we offer different levels of support:

Universal Support- To meet the needs of all our pupils  through our overall ethos and our wider curriculum. For instance developing resilience for all.

Additional support- For those who may have short term needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement.

Targeted support-  For pupils who need more differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions such as wellbeing groups or personal mentors.

At our school we:

  • offer support from Jo (Catholic Care) to help children to understand their emotions and feelings better
  • help children feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries
  • help children socially to form and maintain relationships
  • promote self esteem and ensure children know that they count
  • help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks
  • Offer 1 to 1 sessions for children and parents
  • Use family sessions to work through family issues, bereavement, or social concerns.

Happiness Heroes

The below Year 5 pupils are our Happiness Heroes!

We work with a buddy from Year 3 or 4 for one half term. We usually have children who struggle with friendships, quiet in class, maybe they might have things going on at home and/or school that is affecting them or worrying them. They come with us for some time out of class every Wednesday afternoon for 45 minutes. We also use breaktimes to offer support either in class or at our daily mile track.

With our buddy we do a variety of things such as crafting, playing out, play games, make cards on special occasions i.e. Easter, Valentines etc, chatting with one another and making sure we're all feeling ok.

It gives us all an opportunity to meet and make new friends around school who we wouldn't normally speak to and be more confident.

Time out from their own classroom with other children in the school is proving to be really settling and helping the children, Wednesday can't come round quick enough for them being with their buddies.

Zones of Regulation

At St.Winefride's we use Zone of Regulation as our Social, emotional learning framework and pathway to regulation.

Each child begins each school day by placing their name on a zone. This zone is then explored if needed with an adult or peer group.
